Do you know the Rule of 72?
The Rule of 72 is a formula used to calculate how long money will double in value, given a particular interest rate. While it’s often used to describe investments, it can and does today for many Americans work against you:
To calculate the time period that an investment or debt will double, divide the integer 72 by the expected rate of return.
The formula assumes a single average rate over the life of the investment or debt.
72 / interest rate = number of years investment or debt will double. So, if you have a credit card charging you 18% yearly interest with an average balance of $6,000 (which in 2026 is the “supposed average” for Americans) in just four years that debt will double to $12,000.
